Frequently Asked Questions
Alaskan Facts and Trivia
Alaska's Time Zone
Please ask family, friends, and associates to take into consideration the
difference between Alaska's time zone and their own when contacting a guest. The
Alaska Time Zone is 4 hours behind Eastern, 3 hours behind Central, 2 hours
behind Mountain, and 1 hour behind the Pacific Time Zone.
For example:
12: noon Eastern Time - 8:00 am in Alaska
12: noon Central Time - 9:00 am in Alaska
12: noon Mountain Time - 10:00 am in Alaska
12: noon Pacific Time - 11:00 am in Alaska
Waders
Alaska Legends Adventure Resort provides hip waders for our guests use during
their stay. If you plan to bring chest waders, make sure you have a comfortable
fit in both body and foot. Waders with built-in boots or waders with separate
wading shoes are appropriate. “Breathable” waders are highly recommended. With
suitable light to mid- weight thermal underwear worn beneath you will be dry,
warm and comfortable during any week of the season. Felt soles are important.
Please, do not bring wading shoes with studded-soles or integral metal cleats!!!
They are not needed and they destroy our lodge, boats and river banks and
bottoms. Bring removable cleats if you feel you need them.
Rain Wear
Rain wear is a critical accessory. Have the best quality, as it's likely to rain
at some point in the trip. Your fit should allow for layers of clothing beneath.
Bring rain pants if you plan to use hip-waders. If you're purchasing rain wear
for the trip avoid bright colors (they spook fish) and be sure the jacket has a
hood. Short, waist-length raincoats work best for wading and are highly
recommended.
Life/Floatation Jackets
U.S. Coast Guard-approved flotation vests are provided for every guest when
boating days are scheduled.
Clothing
The atmosphere within the lodge is informal at all times. Alaska is known for
its many fluctuations in weather, therefore it is important to have the proper
clothing for all of the conditions that may arise. Your selection of garments
for outdoor activities is especially important. Plan your outdoor wardrobe using
layers. Start your layering with lightweight, full-sleeved or thermal underwear.
Follow that by a mid-weight cotton or wool shirt then a fleece-insulated
pullover or cardigan garment. Your outermost garment will be the waterproof rain
jacket with hood described earlier. Remember it is easier to take the layers off
as the day progresses and warms up rather than trying to stay warm when it cools
down. Bring a small knapsack or gym-sized duffle to store your extra layers and
personal belongings in the field.

Fishing Tackle and Equipment
You need not bring any tackle to Alaska Legends Adventure Resort. A
comprehensive selection of rods and reels and effective flies, lures and
terminal tackle will be provided for your use at no additional charge. We also
have an ample supply of light spinning gear and heavy spinning and casting gear
for King Salmon. We begin the season with more than enough fly rods and reels to
provide for every guest in any appropriate situation. However, we ask that you
bring a minimum selection of your personal favorite fly rods and reels if you
have even one and don't mind traveling with it. That way you are assured of
having appropriate gear and can rely on us for backup outfits or specialty
outfits. Use these specifications to select from your personal rods and reels:
Grayling
Any rod from 2 to 5 weight, 6 to 8˝ ft. with floating line and single action
reel with pawl or disc drag and backing. Fine cane rods are excellent for these
fish.
Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char, Dolly Varden, Lake Trout
Any rod from 5 to 7 weight, 8˝ to 9˝ ft. (9 ft. 6 wt. is best) with floating
line. An extra spool with sinking-tip line is optional. We recommend a reel with
a disc drag and at least 100 yards of backing (if you bring only one outfit,
bring this one).
Northern Pike
Any rod from 7 to 8 weight, 9 to 9˝ ft. with floating line and disc drag reel
with backing.
Chum Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Silver Salmon
Any rod from 7 to 9 weight, 9 to 10 ft., with fast or extra-fast sinking tip,
sinking or shooting-head line and a spare spool. We recommend a disc drag reel
and at least 200 yards of backing (if you bring two outfits, make this your
second).
King Salmon
Any rod from 10 to 12 weight, 9 to 10 ft., with fast and extra-fast sinking tip,
sinking or shooting-head line and a spare spool. The reel must have a disc drag
with a large diameter spool capable of holding at least 250 yards of backing.
Here are guidelines if you wish to bring your own spinning or casting gear:
Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Lake Trout, Arctic Char,
Grayling, Pink Salmon
A medium or medium-light spinning outfit with a reel capacity of 100+ yards of 8
lb. test line.
Silver Salmon, Chum Salmon, Northern Pike
6-7 ft. medium-heavy action spinning outfit with a reel capacity of 200-250 yds.
of 12-14 lb. test line and a strong smooth drag.
King Salmon
A 7-9 ft. heavy action spinning or casting outfit with a reel capable of holding
200-300 yds. Of 17-25 lb. test line. The reel should have a high retrieve ratio
and a very strong, very smooth drag.
1-piece spinning or casting rods are not only difficult to transport on
commercial airlines but are virtually impossible to safely store in the luggage
compartment of DeHavilland Beaver aircraft. Bring only two or more piece rods.
Closed-face reels, ultra-light action rods and line tests of less than 6 lb. are
of no use under any circumstances encountered.
